Americans are once again on the move – and migrating to the Sun Belt. This fact presents opportunities in terms of a growing workforce, tax base and active housing market. It also brings challenges: how to provide the infrastructure and public services that people need to thrive, and how to maintain the state’s unique environment and quality of life.
The 2007-2009 recession hit U.S. workers, consumers and families hard. It was also hard on U.S. industries. Americans are regaining confidence in some sectors more quickly than others. That confidence is key to a strong recovery.
Business sectors in the top tier are characterized by a high net-positive rating. For example, the restaurant industry has a total positive rating of 66%, a total negative rating of 7%, producing a net-positive rating of 59%, the highest rating of 25 sectors included in the study.
Business sectors in the second tier are characterized by a somewhat net-positive rating. For example, the telephone industry had a total positive rating of 42%, a total negative rating of 27%, producing a somewhat net-positive rating of +15%.
Sectors in the bottom tier are characterized by a net-negative rating. For example, the oil and gas industry had a total positive rating of 37%, a total negative rating of 44%, producing a net-negative rating of -7%.

|50%||Americans who view the auto industry favorably has increased since a low of 24% in 2009. Slightly more than one-fourth of Americans are neutral (26%) and another 23% are still negative for a net-positive gain of 27%.
