Moving Forward After Prop 140: The Work Toward Fairer Elections Continues
Statement on the Unofficial Results of Ballot InitiativeCenter for the Future of Arizona (CFA) respects the outcome of the 2024 election, in which Proposition 140, the Make Elections Fair initiative, is projected not to pass, receiving 41% of voter support as of Nov. 6. We are disappointed by this outcome, as Prop 140 would have been an important step in making Arizona’s election outcomes more representative of the majority of Arizonans.
This result reflects both a strong demand for a more inclusive primary system and the challenges of building public understanding of significant reforms like open primaries.
CFA remains committed to closing the gap between what Arizonans want and the policies delivered by our political system, including making elections more representative of the majority. We will continue to collaborate with partners and leaders to achieve this priority, as our research has consistently shown that Arizonans want a fairer, less divisive political environment.
Before the election, 77% of voters across party lines expressed a desire for primary system reforms to ensure that elected leaders reflect the interests of the majority. The election result underscores the need for continued public dialogue and understanding around electoral reforms—a process that often requires multiple election cycles. We are hopeful that the leaders of Make Elections Fair will consider trying again.
We are grateful to everyone who supported Prop 140 and remain dedicated to championing nonpartisan efforts that align with what matters most to Arizonans. Our commitment to The Arizona We Want is unwavering, and we will continue advancing a stronger and brighter future that reflects Arizona’s shared public values.
